We are pleased to be part of one of the latest developments within the touch screen/overlay market.  Our partner Kyocera known in the display market for their excellent CSTN and TFT LCD are now mass producing their unique glass/glass structure 4-wire resistive touch. Traditionally 4-wire resistive touches have always been in the main a film/glass construction which have performed extremely well in a host of industrial and commercial applications however they have sometimes suffered in very hostile environments where either cold, heat and humidity have proved very challenging. Through technical advances and specialist construction Kyocera have replaced the front film with an ultra thin (0.2mm) flexible glass layer resulting in superior visability (>85% transmissivity) and a longer operating life (>1M touches on a single point). Operating temperatures at both ends of the spectrum are also accomodated, the glass/glass touch has an operating temperature of -35 ~ +85 degC and a storage temperature of -40 ~ +95 degC.

The rear glass substrate can be supplied in various thicknesses of 0.7, 1.1 and 1.8mm and with the front glass being only 0.2mm thick the overall package is extremely thin whilst still offering excellent durability and environmental properties. The glass/glass touch is hermetically sealed thus preventing a build up of moisture between the rear glass substrate and the front glass which has sometimes been an issue for the traditional film/glass touches in high humidity applications.  

Different surface treatments can also be applied to the front glass, anti-reflection, anti-glare, anti-finger print and if purchasing Kyocera’s packaged product i.e. TFT LCD plus glass/glass touch, the LCDs front polarizer, which dramatically improves the displays readability in sunlight and increases the displays transmissivity to >90%. Sizes start at 3.5″ diagonal and currently go up to 19.0″ (4:3 aspect ratio) covering all the popular display sizes inbetween.

The touch can be supplied as a separate component which the user can then adhere to their own display or we can supply the touch fitted to one of Kyocera’s TFT LCDs, again sizes from 3.5″ to 19.0″.

Our partner Powertip is having a busy start to 2010, as well as their new 3.5″ TFT LCD with Capacitive touch they are also releasing a 4.3″ WQVGA version once again utilizing the capacitive touch technology. The 4.3″ TFT has proven to be a very popular size and format across the industry with many industrial OEM  manufacturers standardizing on this size display. Our range of compact TFT LCD video and VGA kits has further been enhanced by the release of our 5.0″ VGA resolution version. The complete kit includes the 5.0″ VGA TFT, a compact VGA driver board plus OSD setup board and a mounting frame for securing the board and display together and to provide a simple mechanical mounting solution.

The TFT LCD has a built-in LED backlight providing a hi-bright 450 cd/m2 and also offers an excellent contrast ratio for such a small display of 400:1. The latest addition to our colour TFT LCD video kit range is the BT043DBEAHH352a$.

The 4.3″ kit solution offers both video (CVBS - PAL/NTSC/SECAM auto detect) and a VGA inputs on the same very compact driver board and is driven by a 12VDC power supply, the kit also comes with a 6 key OSD menu board for display set up and signal selection etc.. The 4.3″ TFT is a wide screen format offering 480 x 272 WQVGA resolution and incorporates a 350cd/m2 white LED backlight plus with a high contrast ratio of 400:1 and wide viewing angles of U/D 55/70 degress and L/H 70/70 degrees optical clarity is excellent. The display also has an integral mounting bracket which allows for the use of the more traditional mounting/securing method of nuts and bolts etc..

One of our principals has developed a dual LCD touch screen monitor with a single base. One screen is directly mounted above the base as per a normal touch monitor. The second screen (without touch), can be set to the left, right, above or the reverse of screen one i.e. with the rear side facing the rear of monitor one and facing outwards to a possible second user or viewer. Screen two is attached to a pivoting mounting arm with a large a 210 degree turning arc. 

There are currently two sizes available, a 17.0″ (x2) and a 19.0″ (x2), features common to both are as follows:-

• Resolution: 1280×1024 / 2560 x 1024
• Viewing Angles: U/D = 80/80, L/R= 80/80

In use the screens can display the same picture on both screen one and two, different images i.e. user information on screen one and advertisements or video feeds on screen two (facing the customer), an edited version of screen one can also be shown on screen two if certain information is needed but other information is not, screen one can also have a PIP of what is being shown on screen two. The operator of screen one (touch version) can select the information shown on screen two which is facing the customer (wow that was difficult to explain). 

When we were first approached to market this monitor here in the UK we were unsure of the potential users and markets however the more you think about the product you can clearly see the advantages for use in certain applications. Our partner JnM Display’s range of Ultra High Brightness TFT LCD are ideal for a host of applications that require the display to be read and understood, not just seen in full direct sunlight. JnM take a standard base panel from LG or Samsung and replace the standard CCFL backlight with either an LED or super high brightness CCFL backlight unit (BLU). We feel that for a panel to be defined as sunlight readable the brightness needs to be a minimum of 1000cd/m2, there are a few exceptions to this rule where it is physically not possible to engineer the replacement backlight to fit within the existing TFT panel metalwork however in most cases the brightness is still a super high 900 cd/m2.

When using our TFT panels in this type of environment what we also generally see is the need for the panels to be able to be used in both low and high temperatures. This can be solved by using our LED backlit versions which will operate down at -30 degC and up at +85 degC.

Sizes start at 6.4″ VGA (LED-900 cd/m2) with currently the largest size being a 38.0″S (LED-1200 cd/m2) with all the popular sizes covered in between.

The 5.7″ LCD size has long been the key size for displays in the industrial product market, traditionally the QVGA version can be found in a host of applications from data-loggers to cash machines to medical monitors etc. and pretty much all had to have a separate dedicated controller to interface to this TTL panel. This was either as an IC added to the applications mother/driver board or as a dedicated display driver board. 

With the introduction of the 5.7″ VGA version a few years back customers still had the challenge to interface to these TTL panels, larger panels 6.4″ and upwards were now being produced with the industry standard LVDS interface which made driving them from an embedded or single board PC relatively easy. The demand from 5.7″ customers looking to make the jump from QVGA to full VGA is as strong as ever and now we have a 5.7″ VGA TFT with an LVDS interface which we hope will enable them to make the transition easier by using off the shelf embedded or single board PCs for their applications.

March is starting to be a busy time for new product launches within our supplier portfolio.
