From Kyocera, one of the world’s premium TFT LCD suppliers to the industrial/OEM market comes another first. The THG057VGLAC-H00 is a 5.7″ VGA Transflective Colour TFT LCD that is suitable for direct sunlight viewing.
Displays aimed at the outdoor product market have a hard specification to meet, with the most obvious the need of being able to read the display in all lighting conditions from total darkness to direct sunlight.
You have two ways to tackle this problem, first, fight the sun with a transmissive LCD with a very high brightness CCFL backlight which on average will give you around 1000cd/m2 brightness which is good but will still wash out in full sunlight (have you ever tried using an ATM in direct sun), however with high brightness comes a high power consumption certainly a problem in battery powered applications. The second is to use a transflective LCD and harness the sunlight by using the LCD’s reflective properties. Kyocera have chosen the latter technology coupled with a low power white LED backlight for the other end of the light spectrum for their latest addition to their V-Series range.
This new 5.7″ TFT (THG057VGLAC-H00) complements the existing V-Series displays with the same mechanical outline as all the rest in the 5.7″ family which makes for an easy upgrade to existing equipment.
